Understanding Feelings

This week we are exploring Feelings. Through a game we got to know our current understanding about feelings. Passing the ball with a twist - Whoever gets caught with the ball... will enact a feeling. Show the feeling through facial expressions and some actions. Others have to guess the name of the feeling. We all had fun making those faces.

Body speaks. Through actions body shows what feeling one person is experiencing. If we observe people closely we can see what they are feeling. Thinking about the feelings that actions portray makes us sensitive to one's body language and how much it can say. This will also help us in being sensitive to other's feelings.

We scanned through the newspapers and looked for pictures with different feelings. The children got to see in detail and talk about how specific expressions or body actions tell us about what a person is feeling.

One of the observation is that the vocabulary of feelings is limited to happy, sad, crying, angry and excited. When we read out a list of feelings, we realized that there are many more feelings we feel throughout the day but we failed to recognize them and name the feelings.

Once the children are aware of their feelings, they can start to look at what is causing the feeling. Knowing the cause can help alleviate the feeling. For example, knowing that Sam was struggling with climbing was enough to lower the level of frustration.

One of the teenager suggested how about making a mood board. I asked how do we do that? What are your thoughts? As per her instructions all the children made a mood board. They used words, drawing and  the cut out of different feeling to make the mood board.

We planned Home Fun activity.....The assignment was to collect the feelings they observe in people around them. They chose 6 feelings and wrote it in 6 boxes in a chart paper. Every time they observe the feeling they will check it on their chart and share it with the group tomorrow. Feelings, Feelings Every Where!
